The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for Deputy Sheriff. The Civil Service Entrance examination for Deputy Sheriff will be open until a certified list is compiled. This list will be utilized for the purpose of filling vacant deputy sheriff positions for a period not to exceed two years from the test date. The application period will be open for a minimum of 30 days from the time of posting.

Physical agility and written testing will be scheduled by appointment. A study guide may be purchased for the written test and is available upon request. Applicants successfully completing physical and written testing will continue to the background investigation and interview portion.

Applications are available at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office or online. A completed employment packet must be submitted to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office to be eligible to participate in the testing process. Electronic submissions will be accepted, however, you must bring the original packet for submission at the time of testing.

Starting wage beginning July 1st, 2024 for this position is $63,181.50 per year. After being employed one year, Iowa certified candidates will receive a $3,000.00 employee bonus incentive and non-certified candidates will receive a $1,000.00 employee bonus incentive.

Lateral transfer is allowed for applicants who are currently Iowa certified peace officers in good standing.  Starting wage for lateral transfers with more than two years post academy service is between $65,721.90-$73,934.40 based on training and experience.

Job Duties

The duty of Deputy Sheriff encompasses the widest variation of duties within the Marshall County Sheriff's Office.  Under general supervision, he/she performs the responsible civil service work in the protection of life and property, investigation of crime, identification processing and the execution of all court processes assigned to the Sheriff’s Office.  He/she has the job of dealing directly with the public during the tour of duty.  Always being vigilant and on the alert for violations of laws and ordinance.  Making every effort to prevent breaches of the peace and offenses against persons or property.  This job requires job knowledge, technical skill, and the ability to work with the public. 

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Each deputy sheriff assigned this position, must be capable of performing the following duties:

Job Qualifications

Applicants must be able to meet all minimum standards for acceptance into the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy; they must be 19 years of age to take the test and 21 years of age to be appointed as a deputy sheriff.
