Deputies responded to multiple motor vehicle accidents on Friday, December 31, 2021, one resulting in a fatality.

January 1, 2022 at 11:54 am

At approximately 2:05 PM on 12/31/2021, Deputies were dispatch to the 1200-mile of U.S. Highway 330 for a report of a motor vehicle crash.  When deputies arrived on scene the driver, identified as Bazirake Kariya, 30, of Des Moines, Iowa was located trapped inside the vehicle in a creek.  First responders and deputies began administering emergency first aid.   Unity Point Heath Ambulance Service transported Mr. Kariya to UPH-Marshalltown where he was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office was assisted Unity Point Heath-Marshalltown Ambulance, Marshall County Medical Examiner’s Office, Marshalltown Fire Department, Rhodes Fire Department, Melbourne Fire Department, Melbourne and Rhodes First Responders.

The crash remains under investigation, however initial information indicates weather related road conditions contributed to the crash.

Freezing rain late afternoon and into the evening hours caused roadways to be covered with ice in several areas of Marshall County.  Deputies responded to over 24 motor vehicle crashes and disabled motorist.
