Marshall County Law Enforcement Respond to Swatting Call

November 8, 2024 at 8:31 am

At approximately 11:04 PM on November 7th, 2024, Deputies were dispatched to the 500 block of 3rd Street SW Street, State Center, Iowa for a report of a shooting that involve the occupants of a residential home.  When deputies arrived on scene, contact was attempted with the juvenile reporting party that was allegedly inside the residence.  After multiple attempts, the homeowner exited the residence.

It was quickly discovered that the initial call to the Marshall County Communications Center was a false report.  MCSO Deputies and State Center Police Officers checked similar addresses in State Center to confirm there was no medical emergencies or threats related to the initial call.  This type of call is often referred to a “Swatting Call”.  “Swatting” is a term that refers to calling or posting in a false report on social media with the intention of creating chaos and provoking a large law enforcement response.  Marshall County has received several of these false reports this year, however the time of night made it difficult for law enforcement to reach residents to ensure there was no threat to the public.

This incident remains under investigation by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and State Center Police Department.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by State Center Police Department, Marshalltown Police Department, Marshall County Communications Center, State Center First Responders, and Unity Point Heath-Marshalltown Ambulance.

The Marshall County, Iowa Sheriff's Office is led by Sheriff Joel Phillips and is committed to keeping communities and neighborhoods safe in Marshall County.
