Motorcycle Driver Leads Deputies and Officers on Pursuit

On August 20, 2024 at approximately 12:57pm a Deputy with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a motorcycle for suspicious activity in LeGrand along with a suspected drivers license violation.  The driver of the motorcycle fled from the attempted traffic stop and led Deputies on a pursuit into the unincorporated town of Quarry and then toward the east side of Marshalltown.  Speeds on Highway 30 were in excess of 90mph.  The motorcycle started to have mechanical issues as it neared the city of Marshalltown and speeds were reduced to between 40- 45mph as it progressed along the northeast edge of town.  The driver lost control of the motorcycle while attempting to drive off the roadway around stopped vehicles at the intersection of 18th Avenue and Marion Street in Marshalltown and the motorcycle tipped over in the roadway where the driver was taken into custody without further incident.  The driver was uninjured.  The motorcycle was impounded pursuant to the investigation.   

 

The driver was identified as Richard Leroy Roop, age 49, of Grinnell.  Roop had two active arrest warrants from Jasper County for narcotics violations.  Roop being held in the Marshall County Jail without bond at this time on the charges below. 

 

Eluding (25mph or more)- D felony

Possession Controlled Substance (meth) 2nd Offense-Aggravated Misdemeanor

Possession Drug Paraphernalia- Simple Misdemeanor

Speeding (90mph in 65mph zone)-Simple Misdemeanor

No Valid Motorcycle License- Simple Misdemeanor

No Insurance- Simple Misdemeanor

Fail to Obey Stop Sign (2 counts)- Simple Misdemeanor

Driving on Wrong Side of Roadway (2 counts)- Simple Misdemeanor
