Rural Marshall County Iowa - The Marshall County Sheriff's Office is advising citizens of a possible scam or fraud that is taking place in our area.
Recently the Marshall County Sheriff's Office received an inquiry about the possibility of a phone scam. During this incident, the caller advised a citizen that they are to be the recipient of extravagant prizes, such as motor vehicles and thousands of dollars in cash. During the conversation, the caller wanted to personally deliver those items to the "winner's" home.
It is believed that the information about the "prize winner" is being generated from the purchase of legitimate discount coupons that are sold are various stores. Companies often times share or sell consumer contact information to other companies.
Citizens are cautioned about deals or winnings that sound "too good to be true," as often times the winner is solicited for additional information such as credit card or bank account numbers. Often, a scam will involve having the potential victim provide good faith monies or claimant's fees, before they can receive or pick up their prizes. In these types of scams, the prizes never materialize, and the citizen is simply out the cash they paid, never to hear from the company again.
Phone calls of such a suspicious nature should be reported to local law enforcement. Scammers and con artists will often time prey on elderly people, especially those who live alone and may not have anyone to consult with about the calls.
If you receive a call from someone who makes an offer, such as we've indicated, ask for contact information on the company and the caller. Inquire about the name of the caller, their phone number as well as where their business office is located. Do NOT give them any information about yourself or about your financial records. If it's an honest and legit person or company who is making you such an offer, they will understand and work with you to verify through authorities.
Incidents of this nature should be reported to you local law enforcement or to the Marshall County Sheriff's Office at 641/754-6380. Information may also be left anonymously on the Sheriff's Tip Line at 641/844-2882.
