Small aircraft makes emergency landing near Marshalltown

September 1, 2014

Near Vance Avenue between 180th and 190th Streets - The Marshall County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a small aircraft accident northeast of Marshalltown at approximately 5:45 P.M.

The pilot, Jason Stone, age 31 of Sioux Falls, SD was en route to the Marshalltown Municipal Airport from Sioux Falls when he reportedly experienced engine problems with the 2001 Vans RV6A single-engine airplane that he was piloting. He reports that when he was approximately two miles southeast of the airport during final approach for landing, he was forced to make an emergency landing in a soybean field near Vance Avenue between 180th and 190th Streets.

During the emergency landing, the mud from the field reportedly caused the front wheel and nose to get stuck in the field causing the plane to flip over onto its top. Mr. Stone was the only occupant and was not injured.

The FAA has been notified and is conducting the follow-up investigation.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Green Mountain Fire Department and First Responders.
