State Center man stabbed in domestic incident

State Center, Iowa - The Marshall County Sheriff's Office responded to a medical call in State Center and found a man lying in the yard suffering from apparent stab wounds. Saturday, October 21, 2017 at approximately 6:15 P.M. the Marshall County Communications Center dispatched an ambulance and State Center First Responders to 401 5th Street SW for an unknown medical incident.

A deputy sheriff in the area responded to the residence and found resident Randy Wengert, age 70, lying in the yard severely wounded. After applying first aid and the arrival of Emergency Medical Services, deputies entered the residence to check on the welfare of Mrs. Wengert and their son Brian, who lives with them.

Deputies ushered Mrs. Wengert safely out of the residence and detained Brian Wengert, age 44, following a brief struggle.

Randy was transported to Unity Point-Marshalltown hospital where he was stabilized and transferred to a Des Moines trauma center, where he remains today.

Brian was also transported to Unity Point- Marshalltown where he was arrested upon his release. Brian Wengert has been charged with attempted murder, obstruction of emergency communications, domestic assault with a weapon and possession of methamphetamine. He has been held on a $25,000 cash bond.

Additional suspects are not believed to be involved at this time.
