Scrap Metal Thefts

Marshall County - The Marshall County Sheriff's Office with the assistance of the State Center Police Department, conducted investigations into various incidents of scrap metal thefts that had occurred in recent weeks in Marshall County, resulting in 4 arrests on Thursday, May 15th, 2014.

Jake Wallen, age 18, of 101 1st St., Lamoille, IA., was charged on May 15th, with Theft 2nd Degree, a class D felony and Criminal Trespass, a simple misdemeanor and was jailed on a $5,000.00, in connection with an incident involving thefts of scrap metal on May 7th, that occurred at 3024 Durham Ave, in Marshall County. Wallen was held after an initial appearance in court.

On Thursday evening, a Sheriff's Deputy and State Center Police went to 304 6th St., SW, in State Center, to conduct follow up investigation. In the process of contacting persons at the residence, the Deputy detected a strong odor of marijuana, which led to having the home cleared of occupants, including a woman and two small children, and a 17 year old male. All persons were initially detained. A search warrant was applied for and issued, regarding the theft investigation and apparent drug violations. Evidence collected at the scene included the seizure of two pickup trucks, one containing various items of scrap metal, approximately 2 ounces of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and $360.00 in cash. The investigation led to the following arrests:

Daniel Leonard, age 35, of 304 6th St. SW., State Center.
Leonard was charged with 2 counts of theft 2nd degree, class D felonies, two counts of Neglect of a dependent person, Class C felonies, Possession w/intent to deliver a schedule I controlled substance, class D felony, and criminal trespass, a simple misdemeanor. Leonard was jailed on a $10,000.00 bond and held after initial appearance in court.
